Bianca Raffaella Shadows of Nurture, 2025
47 1/4 x 39 3/8 in
A standing pregnant figure occupies the centre-left of the canvas. She is painted in milky whites and pale greys. Her head is loosely defined near the upper centre, and her pregnant belly projects clearly from the middle of the body. The figure appears to turn or shift rather than stand still. Around her are broad passages of blush pink, pale umber and white. Some marks sweep across the body; others break away from it. The lower half becomes increasingly loose, with white and pink paint dripping towards the bottom edge.
The body feels present, but unsettled. This work came from the physical discomfort of late pregnancy. I ached. I was restless.
